Town Councillors

The Town Council comprises 20 councillors (also called members) who are elected every 4 years. The Mayor is elected each year in May.

All Parish Councillors are required by law to complete a register of interests form to register:

  • their Disclosable Pecuniary Interests; and

  • the Disclosable Pecuniary Interests of their spouses or civil partners (or persons with whom they live in that capacity)

The Councillors' Register of Interests is kept by the Borough Council and is available online at: www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/homepage/99/parish_council_register_of_interest

I moved to Downham in 2007 and my family all live locally. Having worked as a nurse for over 25 years, I have a wealth of skills including communication and engagement.  I also run a successful business and I am a trained mediator and performance coach.  I enjoy running, cycling and yoga but most of all I like to spend time with my family and friends.

I would like Downham to be a vibrant community which celebrates diversity, with activities for all. A town proud of it's history but which also looks forward by engaging residents and businesses to shape it's future enabling it to continue to thrive.  We need a well led, inclusive Council that engages and listens to its stakeholders, and encourages good relationships, working together for the benefit of the town and wider community, whilst also considering our environmental impact.

I have lived locally since 1966, but in Downham for over 30 years. I am semi-retired after 37 years as a teacher working in local High Schools, and have been a member of Downham Market Town Council for over 25 years.  I am a former Mayor and Chair of both Planning and Community Development committees.

I was instrumental in establishing Downham Arts, and am currently a member of the Downham Twinning Association.  I have previously been involved in the Youth Service for this area and this remains a keen interest.

Having been seriously involved with the regeneration programme of 1999/2000 I would like to see a similar evaluation of the town.  I would like the Council to actively engage with the community and issues that affect the town; to secure a vibrant future for all; a town in which we can all enjoy living.

I have been resident here for 23 years and am a member of the Royal British Legion and Institute of Advanced Motorists. I am a retired builder and was the chairman of school governors for a large comprehensive school.  I work to maintain the quality of life enjoyed by residents of the town now and into the future as the town grows.  I enjoy crosswords, suduko, and time spent with my family.

I have lived in Downham Market since 2016, and previously whilst living in St Albans I served as  District Councillor for 9 years.  I joined the Town Council in November last year and although the scope and budget of the Town Council are about 95% smaller than in St Albans, there seems to be almost as much work to do.

Since moving here, I’ve joined the University of the Third Age and the Twinning Club.  I also belong to Toastmasters International, which encourages members’ self-confidence, by teaching speaking and leadership skills.

I have settled very quickly into the community, finding residents to be friendly and welcoming.  I plan to support the council in its efforts to foster and develop the spirit of the community and should appreciate your comments and suggestions.

I run a business in Downham Market and have been a regular visitor here for many years.  A retired Police Officer, I bring a level headed approach to every aspect of my Council life, and am passionate about the success of Downham Market.  I have a particular interest in protecting the environment, and my business creates beautiful things from recycled materials like glass and wood.  I am a member of the Downham Market and District Heritage Society.  I hope to help create a healthy, happy and supportive town for the whole community, and for the Council to continue to deliver quality services and support to the town.

I moved to Downham Market in 2007 and have volunteered for a number of local charities based in and around the town.  I enjoy walking in the local area and learning about the history of Downham and the surrounding areas.  I am constantly impressed by the friendliness and community spirit here, and would like to help ensure this continues as the town develops and grows.  I have a particular interest in both the Market and our wonderful Town Hall, and would like to help them become a focal point for the community, attracting visitors to Downham while still retaining the unique character of the town.

My wife and I moved here in August 2018.  I have worked for a number of Councils as a Youth Worker and was previously an official observer for Exeter City Council. I play rugby and I'm also a (very!) amateur musician.  I spend a lot of the time causing trouble with my puppy, Charlie!  I would like new comers to the town (like myself) to feel part of the town, seeing an increase in both infrastructure and community.  I hope to be a voice for the town and a pro-active, positive influence on the community.

I have lived in Downham Market and nearby for 7 years and have been a Councillor since 2016.  I spent my career working with the Prudential, mainly in finance and property investment.  I am a member of Discover Downham, the U3A, the local Lions Club and the Downham Market Festival Committee.  Working with and for the community is what gives me a buzz and I am pleased to be involved in the new Music Festival for September 2019.  I hope to help the town become a better place for all to live and work.  I am interested in preserving the environment, wildlife and all things historic and enjoy taking my trusty camera (and pretending to be a photographer) on walks in our unique countryside.

A 'whole life' resident (almost 40 years) of Downham Market, my whole student years were spent in the schools of the town. I left sixth form and went into a part time role at the local sugar refining plant, where I have worked my way up into a management role over the last 20 years with the same company.

I have a love for visiting old, pretty towns and villages around the country and the history that comes with them (and stopping for food and drinks in the lovely restaurants and cafes that usually inhabit these areas!)

I recently joined the council to try and drive my passion for reinvigorating the town into a thriving hub, where independent businesses can grow and succeed; and people want to travel to to spend some time socialising and shopping. Our town has a lot of beautiful areas that I would like to see recognised and built upon to make this happen.

My family has lived in the town for over 50 years.  I have lived and worked  both locally and across the country before finally retiring to my home time six years ago. Since then I have developed a wide range of  local interests from Arts, supporting the Dementia cafe and creating a new business in the town I am a trustee for  several charities, a local school governor and  I have completed a term as a Borough Councillor. I have joined the Town Council as I am a passionate believer in the future of Downham, and  enjoy being part of the work of the council and helping it develop and deliver a new vision for the town.

To follow

Hello! I have lived in Downham Market all my life and I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful town. Recently returned from the University of Lincoln, where I studied Product Design, I am keen to get stuck into all the things the Council has to offer.

I hope to bring a youth perspective and enthusiasm to the council and see it succeed in bringing a vibrancy to the people and businesses whom reside here.

I have always loved planning and getting involved with projects; I sat on various committees in secondary school, completed a year as head girl at my sixth form and have represented my peers in university as course rep, school rep and, for my third and final year, was elected to be Chair of the Students Union. I was on the committee for the first ever Downham Market Live Music Festival and was a Production Assistant on the Frequency Festival planning team in 2019.
