A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF DOWNHAM MARKET TOWN COUNCIL
Hello to the community of Downham Market,
It has been a couple of weeks since I last wrote to you and it has been a very busy period for the Town Council some of that time has been spent liaising with the Market Traders to develop a plan to reopen the market whilst still adhering to all the government guidance and I am delighted to inform you that the market will be open this coming Friday. It will be, as we always promised, bigger and better.
We are full up on both sides of the Town Hall on a Friday and you will find the trusty regular traders being joined by new traders who will all offer something new. We hope the sun shines, everyone observes social distancing and a good day is had by all.
Masks and hand cleaning gel will be provided and precautions in place so that this can be a safe space to enjoy for both traders and customers.
This opening has been possible by working and having meetings with the traders so we could all go forward together and over coming weeks and months the Town Councils hope is that we go on to be even bigger and better and to put the market back into Downham. Put simply “The Town needs a market, but the market needs a Town” So please come and show your support.
Our mask making operation is still going, and we are meeting the current demand, we have been able to help the Dialysis unit at QEH, QEH reception, Tapping House Hospice, Tesco’s and many of our independent shops in Downham Market. It is a privilege to be part of a team that is making Downham Market a safer space.
I am just finalising the agenda for Full Council on 14thJuly at 7.00pm. This will be a Zoom meeting and if you want to attend virtually you need to apply for an invitation before 5.00pm on July 13th. We are hoping that this meeting will be streamed live on YouTube so that we can be transparent and open.
We have a small group of Councillors who are working on an exciting project for next Spring. SIS (Spring into Sustainability) will be an event where we look at how we can change the way we live to make it more sustainable. There will be guest speakers, exhibitions and fashion shows of upcycled or preloved clothes. As part of this they are looking to compile a book of sustainable recipes for the event, they have put a shout out for recipes made from leftovers so please contact us if you have any. We are also publishing on our website and Facebook helpful household hint, including ones using old proven methods utilising household items, and some that you may not have come across before. Watch out for these and any new requests for different types of recipes, hopefully you will be able to share with us with some yours.
On Friday night I had the pleasure to be one of the judges at “Downham Market has got Talent”, I was blown away by the performances both live and recorded, a big thank you goes out to all of the contestants who took the time and effort to apply. it was really was a difficult decision to choose a winner, A big congratulation goes to our winners Beth & Arabella, and you will be able to see them perform live at next year’s Downham Market Live. Downham really does have a lot of talent and if you would like to view the performances a recording of the night is available on our Facebook page.
Although the lockdown restrictions have been loosened and it is great to be able to get back to supporting our local businesses, I would still urge you to all be careful and aware,
Until next time take care.
Cllr Becky Hayes
