Mayor's weekly message 18th June 2020

Good morning Downham Market

Well the last two weeks since I have written to you have been exciting and eventful.

We have co-opted a new Town Councillor, who I believe is the youngest Town Councillor, to serve on Downham Market Town Council. Willow Woodmin has just finished university and we were all impressed by her maturity and innovative ideas. We had 5 candidates to choose from all of which had something to offer in such different ways. It seems such a shame that we had to choose one when the candidates had such a wide range of experience and ideas.

Willow is looking at our various committees and strategy groups to see which ones she is interested in and might like to join. We are all looking forward to working with her and hearing her fresh and new ideas.  Just before lockdown we were working towards interacting with our younger community and we are hoping that Willow may help us with that.

On Tuesday we held our Full Council meeting. The Council are going to have to make some very difficult decisions in the coming months, our income is down because of the Covid emergency and we had to make the hard decision to not award any grants this year. We are looking at how we can have the Christmas lights up, but this may have to be without the usual big event we usually have and all enjoy. We will keep reviewing all these decisions in line with any new Government advice.

Last week we had two stalls on the market with about 160 people visiting, it is a start and as we continue with the phasing in of the market, we hope to have five stalls this week and looking forward we hope that we may, in addition, be able to open up on a Saturday, whilst still abiding to all the Covid regulations and our insurers instructions.  People were genuinely pleased that we supplied free masks and hand sanitising gel for them to use and we are hoping to continue with this for the foreseeable future.

I feel I need to comment on all the postings that have been on social media in the last two weeks. I am aware that sometimes misinformation is put out in these posts and I would love the chance of giving you the facts, therefore If you read something or see something and want to understand what it is about and learn the truth about the situation please email me via the Town Clerk on elaine.oliver@downhammarkettc.co.ukand I will  happily answer any questions you have.

At this point I feel it is important to state again that Downham Market Town Council has no intention of closing the market. The name of our town means we need to have a market and all the Town Councillors are united in keeping the market open and alive with the aspiration of improving the market to make it even better. Wouldn’t it be great if Downham became known for its market…..that’s what we are working towards.

The extra bollards and coning of parking bays that have appeared in the Town Centre, are precautions put in by NCC in conjunction with BCKLWN. Some questions have been raised about the effectiveness of these. Although we do have to acknowledge the importance and necessity of social distancing, I am planning to take this to BCKLWN at my next meeting with them on Friday to see if anything better can be done.

I also just want to remind you all that we still are in Covid times, please observe social distancing and please be aware and alert. We are not yet back to normal and being careful is imperative.

Until next time, take care.
