The
Town Hall is mid-Victorian and was erected as a memento of Queen Victoria’s
Golden Jubilee in 1887. It is a building of white and moulded brick, relieved by
brown carrstone panels in the Renaissance style, and designed by a firm of London
architects for the Town Hall Company, who raised the capital (£1,700) to cover
the cost of construction by public subscription, and came from people in all
walks of life.
In
the 1970's the Town Hall was passed to the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and
West Norfolk for them to manage along with a number of other facilities within
the boundaries of Downham Market. In 2008 the building was passed back into the
care of the Town Council and so it remains today.
The
Town Hall is a place for the people of the town and area to meet, to arrange and
attend a wide variety of functions and events.
There
are currently three meeting rooms in the building that are available for hire
for almost any type of function that the hirer wishes from wedding receptions to
book sales, from theatrical presentations to public meetings.

The
Main Hall has an adjacent kitchen area and stage. This room is equally suitable
for dinner/dances and quiz evenings. The stage has basic stage lighting and
there are also the facilities for large screen cinema/conference presentations.
Tiered seating is available with a seating capacity of about 180. A wide variety
of seating arrangements can be accommodated to suit whatever type of event is
planned with a maximum capacity of about 280 people.

The
Bar Room has a door opening onto the Town Square and can again be used for
anything from coffee mornings to smaller meetings and discussion groups. The
seating here is limited to 52. A bar space is available for serving hot or cold
drinks and light snacks.
The
Assembly Room is accessed by two short flights of stairs to the first floor.
This room is also suitable for small conferences or meetings and has regularly
been used for yoga sessions. The maximum seating capacity here is 72.
